Los Angeles, CA (May 26, 2011) – On May 24, in the beautiful Mesa (AZ) Arts Center and with more than one thousand elated graduating students and their supporters present, Mr. Kevin Howell, CORE K12 President, addressed the graduates and audience with words of inspiration and hope. In addition to his graduation address, Howell also presented Dr. Sally Downey, EVIT Superintendent, with its first EVIT/CORE Scholarship foundation check. Supt. Downey, in expressing appreciation for the CORE/EVIT scholarship, reinforced Howell’s message with the EVIT saying, “we turn passions into paychecks.”

The graduation (or “completion”) ceremonies were part of three days of events that included speeches by Dr. Brenda Dann-Messier, Assistant Secretary of Education for the U.S. Department of Education for Vocational, Adult, and Correctional Education; John Huppenthal, Superintendent of Public Instruction for the State of Arizona; and a presentation by Bobbie O’Boyle, Executive Director for the Arizona Educational Foundation, honoring EVIT with its second A+ Award as a distinguished school.

Located in Mesa, Arizona, EVIT is a joint technical education district that, in addition to adult learners, primarily serves 11th and 12th graders from ten surrounding school districts through their “feeder” high schools. EVIT students participate in selected career pathway programs that lead to specific career diplomas or certificates.  Howell praised EVIT students for their commitment, focus, determination, optimism, and confidence. He clearly felt that he was addressing the “best of the best”.

EVIT has more than 40 career pathway programs that include Aviation Technician (FAA A&P), Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), Carpenter, Electrician, Medical Biotechnician, Law Enforcement Officer and Cosmetologist, to name just a few. EVIT is one of the leading Technical Center model schools in the U.S. and serves approximately 3,000 high school students and 500 adults.

Other joint CORE/EVIT activities during the celebration included a golf cart tour of the EVIT campus, classroom visits, a student perfect attendance recognition presentation in which the winning student received a new car, a student focus group, a radio interview with Kevin Howell on the recently licensed EVIT FM station, and a VIP luncheon at the location of EVIT business partner, Hilton Mesa Hotel.

Additional staff attending the completion ceremonies included Mr. Bob Collins, CORE Careers and Skills Development CEO; Mr. Alan Helfman, Associate Vice President, CORE Careers and Skills Development; Mr. Phil Thompson, VP of Marketing for CORE K12; Mr. Jeffrey Farnsworth, CORE Careers and Skills Development Marketing Manager; and soon-to-be Vice President of Online Production for CORE Careers and Skills Development, Ms. Katherine Endacott.
Also attending the EVIT ceremonies for the first time as a special guest was Mr. Anshul Sonak, President, CORE Projects and Technologies, representing the CORE International Education headquarters in Mumbai, India. Mr. Sonak participated in all events where he had the opportunity to engage first-hand with students, teachers, government representatives, EVIT board members, school leadership, and business leaders from the community. Mr. Sonak was impressed with EVIT’s commitment to excellence. In recognizing the “flat world” in which we live and work, he spoke passionately about the need for global careers and the potential international sharing of ideas.
